MARGAO: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s letter to the sarpanchas asking them to harvest rain water were read out at two extraordinary gram sabhas held on Sunday at Chinchinim Deussua and Betalbatim while at Carmona trees were distributed.
At Chinchinim, the villagers asked that the Water Resources Department be directed to repair and strengthen the bandhs that go a long way in water harvesting and breaches in them lets the water drain away.
Besides they also demanded that all the ponds and water bodies in the village be desilted because that would be the best way for water harvesting and maintaining the ground water table.
At Betalbatim, too, the villagers demanded that all the ponds and wells in the village be desilted. They also demanded that the drains be properly maintained so that water is not wasted but conserved.
At Carmona 300 trees were distributed to the villagers free of cost so that they have a green village. Sarpanch Allwyn Jorge disclosed that garden trees, fruit bearing trees, medicinal plants, forest trees and spices were distributed which were obtained from the Forest Department.
“We are not distributing cashew or mango trees,” he said.
