MoEF rejects State proposal to extend GCZMA term

PANJIM: The Union Ministry
for Environment and Forest (MoEF) has turned down the State government’s
request for an extension to the members of Goa Coastal Zone Management
Authority (GCZMA), whose term ended on July 21.

The three-year term of GCZMA
consisting of four expert members and heads of various departments including
forest, environment, panchayat, public works, water resources, tourism, expired
on July 21.

The State had then approached
the MoEF seeking an extension to the committee, however, this was rejected.
“MoEF has rejected extension to the GCZMA stating that there is no provision
under the Law to give extension to such an authority,” sources said.

Sources said that the
proposal for extension was moved after the end of the term. “The normal
procedure in any department is to go for extension before the end of the term,”
sources said.

Meanwhile, the government
had considered a few names for the new committee which include Sachin Tendulkar
from Mineral Foundation, S J Ghodse from Dhempe College of Arts and Science,
Principal of Dnyanprassarak Mandal College and Chowgule College. However, these
names are still under consideration and have not been placed before the MoEF
for approval.
