MAPUSA: The removal of garbage bins by the panchayat dominated the Moira gram sabha on Sunday.
Villagers on Sunday questioned the panchas as to why did the panchayat remove the garbage bins which were placed at various places in the village without any prior information. The locals said that now, with the removal of garbage bins, the people  have started dumping garbage along the roadsides.
The villagers said that the door-to-door garbage operates on alternate days as a result of which people are forced to dump garbage in open spaces.
Responding to this, the panchayat secretary said, “People were not segregating the garbage and were dumping mixed garbage directly into the bins.”
The locals said that the panchayat should have organised awareness programmes to educate the people on how to segregate wet and dry waste before dumping the same into the bins. The panchayat later passed a resolution to discuss the issue at its next meeting.
Rohidas Shirodkar, a local, said, “As per the Panchayati Raj Act, all panchas should attend three of the five gram sabhas but each time they fail to attend and the panchayat too has failed to take any action against them.
Sarpanch Pooja Chari said, “Ensuring full attendance is out my reach. The panchayat issues notices along with agenda of the topics to be discussed at the gram sabha 10 to 15 days prior to the meeting. But then it is the duty of the panchas to make it a point to attend gram sabha and answer people’s queries.”
People also informed that a few drains in the village have been choked with mud and need to be cleaned.
