The government has also increased the amount of ex-gratia for Goa martyrs to Rs 10 lakh. This was announced at the annual Independence Day programme by the Department of Sainik Welfare.
Addressing the gathering, Sainik Welfare secretary Venu Gopal Naik said, “There are a number of schemes by the government of India and the State government for veterans and their families. I am happy to say that the State government has hiked the Financial Assistance Scheme for the World War II Veterans from Rs 4,000 to Rs 8,000.”
He added, “The State government has also increased the amount of ex-gratia for Goa martyrs to Rs 10 lakh and also one member of the family will be given a government job in Goa and also free education for their children.”
The department of Sainik Welfare organised the Independence Day reception to felicitate the veterans and widows of Army personnel in Goa. Around 50 of them were felicitated by the North Goa District Collector Nila Mohanan who was chief guest and Brigadier S K Agarwal, Station Commander.
Speaking on the occasion, Mohanan said, “It’s our duty to remember all the martyrs who have struggled for independence. Families should take the benefits of all the government schemes.”
