MARGAO: Despite being starved of government funds for its functioning, nothing has prevented South Goa Zilla Panchayat from organizing periodic study tours for its members to ostensibly study functioning of similar institutions elsewhere in the country.
In fact, Tuesday’s meeting of the South Goa Zilla Panchayat has cleared two such tours ~ an exposure tour to Hyderabad and a study tour to North India, probably in Uttar Pradesh or Madhya Pradesh.
While ZP members will travel to Hyderabad to the National Institute of Rural Development in September, coming Diwali vacation the members will fly to MP or UP as part of the proposed study tour.
ZP Chairperson Nelly Rodrigues informed that the exposure tour will be sponsored by Goa Institute of Rural Development Agency. Tuesday’s meeting has formed a panel to decide on the date for the proposed tour of North India. The proposal would soon go to the government for approval,” she said.
Meanwhile, Nelly reminded the ZP members of the promise made by Panchayat Minister Laxmikant Parsekar to have a meeting of the South Goa ZP with the Chief Minister for devolution of powers and functions to the district panchayat bodies.
Today’s meeting opposed the government policy on casinos and said no to any attempt to introduce dance bars in the State.
ZP member Daya Pagi also opposed the extended school timings and demanding that the government follow the old timings.
