PANJIM: The southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala on Sunday, three days ahead of its usual date of June 1. However, the IMD Goa observatory has said that monsoon conditions are not favourable for its onset over the coastal State in the next three-four days.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa incharge Rahul said that the southwest monsoon has set over Kerala on Sunday and its progress is closely being monitored for advancement over Goa coast.

He said that the conditions are favourable for further advance of monsoon in some parts of Central Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Kerala, some more parts of Tamil Nadu, some parts of Karnataka and some more parts of South and Central Bay of Bengal, some parts of northeast Bay of Bengal and northeastern State during next three-four days.

“As per the latest update, monsoon conditions are less likely to set over Goa in the three-four days. During this period, the monsoon is likely to progress only upto come parts of Karnataka,” he said.

The normal onset date of monsoon over Goa is June 5. Since the monsoon onset over Kerala was three days ahead of its normal date, the possibility that the monsoon may advance to the latitudes of Goa before normal date, cannot be ruled out.

Rahul said the progress of monsoon depends on several factors such as strength of monsoon currents, localised weather features, etc, and hence it is not thumbnail to say that, monsoon will always reach Goa, within four or five days of its advancement to Kerala.

In 2021, four-month long Southwest monsoon had arrived over Goa on June 5, almost 48 hours after it reached Kerala.

Meanwhile, IMD has said that isolated rainfall activity will continue over Goa in the coming days, with lightning and thunders. A slight increase in the spatial distribution of rainfall is likely around June 1 onwards.
