Monsoon continues to create havoc across Goa

IMD says very heavy rainfall, exceeding 11.5cm rainfall in 24 hours, is likely to fall over the State today. Rain is likely to be accompanied with winds at a speed of 30-40kmph; Orange alert issued for Thursday

PANJIM: The monsoon continued to create havoc across the State and it recorded almost five inches of rainfall on Wednesday. 

Normal life was severely affected as a result of inundating low-lying areas, felling of trees, traffic jams and incidents of water entering into the houses being reported in some parts. 

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa observatory has issued a heavy rainfall warning for the State till June 20, advising fishermen against venturing into the sea during the period. An Orange alert has been issued for Thursday.

The weather dept has said that the monsoon conditions have been strengthened over Goa and a cyclonic circulation over North Konkan and neighbourhood seen between 3.1 and 7.6 kms above mean sea level. 

“Very heavy rainfall, exceeding 11.5cm rainfall in 24 hours, is very likely over the State on June 18. Rain is likely to be accompanied with winds at a speed of 30-40kmph,” IMD Goa said in its bulletin. 

Meanwhile, on Wednesday 137.2mm, which is over 5 inches, rainfall was recorded in the State. 

Heavy to very heavy rainfall continued to lash the State. In Panjim and surrounding areas, Fire and Emergency Services received several complaints of water logging and uprooting of trees. Along 18 June road in Panjim, few vehicles were damaged after huge branch of a tree came crashing down. However, no casualty was reported. 

As per IMD, Old Goa recorded the highest rainfall of 19cm, followed by Sanquelim 17cm, Panjim 15cm, Canacona, Margao and Sanguem 14cm each, Valpoi 13cm and Mormugao and Quepem recorded 12cm each. Pernem and Dabolim received 11 cm rainfall. 

IMD added that no station reported rainfall below 6cm.
