PANJIM: Bringing in much needed relief from scotching heat, the southwest monsoon finally arrived over Goa coast, with a delay of almost five days from its normal date of onset.

The normal date for monsoon onset over Goa is June 5.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa Observatory in-charge Rahul said that the southwest monsoon currents have covered entire Goa as on Friday, June 10. He said that the monsoon onset has been delayed, as the Northern limit of monsoon (NLM) got stagnant for a while at Karwar.

He said that along with Goa, the monsoon has also advanced in some parts of Konkan and some more parts of Karnataka.

The monsoon had set in over Kerala on May 29, three days prior of its usual date of June 1. On May 31, it had reached Karwar, the southern border of Goa and failed to advance thereafter.

IMD had said that Northern limit of monsoon (NLM) getting stagnant for a while at Karwar for a few days before reaching Goa hasn’t been any abnormal scenario and that there have been nine such years, including this year, when the delay from Karwar to Goa has been five days or more. “The longest was in 2007, when the NLM was stagnant in Karwar for 15 days,” he said.

Meanwhile, IMD has issued yellow colour warning for the State till June 14 with possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall activities. The fishermen are advised against venturing into sea during the period due to rough weather conditions.

The public are also advised to avoid open spaces as the conditions may lead to mudslides, water inundation, fall of weak trees, etc.
