PANJIM: The southwest monsoon triggered rainfall, from June to September this year is likely to be normal for the entire country with the Indian Meteorological Department projecting 96 to 104 percent Long Period Average (LPA) rainfall.
However, the likely date of onset of SW monsoon in Goa would be known only after May 15.
“The experimental forecasts from various statistical and dynamic models indicate that the rainfall over the country as a whole is mostly likely to be within the normal range,” IMD website states.
Meanwhile, the Capital City on Wednesday witnessed moderate to heavy showers at mid-night accompanied by thunderstorms and lightening. The IMD state unit however clarified that these are not pre-monsoon showers.
Panjim received 11.8mm of rain with the showers bringing much needed respite to from the night temperatures. The minimum temperature saw a dip, with IMD recording 25 Degree Celsius temperature for the day. The first week of May, was reported to be the hottest week in last three years with temperature touching 28 degree Celsius.
IMD Goa in-charge K V Singh said that the showers were a result of local phenomena developed due to cloudy weather. He said that isolated showers are likely to occur in the state for couple of days.
The state is also likely to have thunder along with the showers, he said.
Singh said that though May precedes the monsoons, the showers will occur in Goa only after May 20. “The clear picture about the onset of monsoon would be known only after May 15,” he said.
