PANJIM: After getting held up for nearly nine days in Karwar thus missing out its normal date to set in over Goa, the southwest monsoon is likely to onset over the coastal State in next 48 hours. The normal date for monsoon onset over Goa is June 5.

The Indian Meteorological Department Goa Observatory in-charge Rahul said that the conditions have become favourable for further advance of monsoon to Goa during next 48 hours.

The monsoon, which had set in over Kerala on May 29, is also likely to advance in more parts of Central Arabian Sea, some parts of South Maharashtra, some parts of Karnataka, remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, some parts of south Andhra Pradesh and some more parts of west central and northwest Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours.

The southwest monsoon had set in over Kerala on May 29, three days ahead of its usual date of June 1. On May 31, it had reached Karwar, the southern border of Goa and failed to advance thereafter.

IMD had said that Northern limit of monsoon (NLM) getting stagnant for a while at Karwar for a few days before reaching Goa hasn’t been any abnormal scenario and that there have been nine such years, including this year, when the delay from Karwar to Goa has been five days or more.

In 2021, the four-month long Southwest monsoon had arrived over Goa on June 5, almost 48 hours after it reached Kerala.

In 2020, the onset over Kerala was on June 1 but in Goa monsoon arrived on June 11. The monsoon onset in 2019 for the coastal State was on June 20 whereas for Kerala it was June 8.

Meanwhile, IMD has warned of possible heavy rains, above 6 cms from June 10 onwards and very heavy rainfall, above 11 cms thereafter. The fishermen are asked not to venture into sea during the period due to rough weather conditions.
