PANJIM: With possibility of a low-pressure formation over Bay of Bengal by October 10, the monsoon is likely to enjoy an extended period in Goa this year as the four-month long weather phenomenon is set for a late withdrawal.
The normal date of monsoon withdrawal for the State is October 14, considering that withdrawal starts from Northwest India by September 17. However, the same has commenced from Wednesday, October 6.

IMD Goa in-charge Rahul said that monsoon withdrawal over Goa will be delayed in the present condition. He said that there are indications of rains from westerly-south westerly wind for about three-four days from October 8 onwards.
“There is also possibility of a low pressure area formation over Bay of Bengal by October 10. Once it forms, it may provide rainfall over eastern and central parts of the country,” he explained.
The complete withdrawal of monsoon over India happens by October 15.
In Goa, Rahul said that “it’s too early to state by when the monsoon will withdraw over the coast”.
In a press statement issued by IMD, it is said that in view of the establishment of anti-cyclonic circulation in the lower troposheric levels over western parts of Northwest India and substantial reduction in moisture content and rainfall, the withdrawal of southwest monsoon has commenced from today as against normal date of September 17.
Southwest monsoon has withdrawn from some parts of west Rajasthan and some parts of adjoining Gujarat.
IMD has said that the conditions are becoming favourable for further withdrawal of southwest monsoon from some parts of Gujarat, entire Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himchal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and some parts of Madhya Pradesh during next three-four days.
The official monsoon season will end on September 30 with six per cent excess rains. State recorded 123.5 inches (3,137mm) of rainfall as against the normal average of 116.7 inches (2,965mm).
Meanwhile, IMD Goa has forecast heavy rainfall, accompanied with thunderstorms and lightening till October 8.
