Mopa airport inaugural date tentatively fixed on Dec 11: CM

Says official confirmation from Prime Minister’s Office over the date of appointment is yet to be received

PANJIM: The Greenfield international airport at Mopa is expected to be commissioned on December 11 but an official announcement would be made after confirmation from the Prime Minister’s Office, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Thursday.

Speaking to mediapersons, Sawant said that an official confirmation from Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) over the date of appointment is yet to be received.

“Tentatively, we are prepared to inaugurate it on December 11,” he said.

Sawant said that GMR, which will operate the airport, the state government as well as the Civil Aviation ministry are all ready to commission the facility, as soon as PMO confirms the date.

The Chief Minister had last week inspected the work of the Mopa airport.

GMR officials were on record to state that only domestic flights would be operated immediately after inauguration in December, while international services will take off and land from January 2023 onwards.

The airport, last month, received the Aerodrome Licence from the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) of the Union Ministry.

The Mopa airport is being constructed in four phases with an annual passenger capacity of 4.4 million in phase I, 5.8 million phase II, 9.4 million in phase III and 13.1 million in phase IV. The ultimate capacity of the airport is 28 million passengers per annum.
