This came to light when the government in an answer to a starred question from Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai replied that it proposes to acquire land for the access road. It stated that the distance from the existing highway to the proposed site is eight kms and that a detailed project report for the new road is yet to be prepared.
This indicates that the government hasn’t yet acquired the crucial access to the proposed international airport site for which land has already been acquired in Pernem taluka.
Sardesai has been consistently alleging that Mopa airport site has only a kutcha access not fulfilling the mandatory four to six lane requirements for international airport.
Sardesai told Herald that the government’s reply bolsters the fears that Section IV of the Land Acquisition Act was allowed to lapse to save certain lands and overlooked the need to acquire land for a proper expressway as mandated by ICAO.
