Mopa land acquisition rate at Rs 60/sq metre

PANJIM, JULY 14 The State government appointed steering committee today decided in principle to give Rs 60 per square meter as compensation to people whose land would be acquired for the international airport at Mopa. Earlier, the government had fixed the land acquisition rate at Rs 6 to Rs 12 per square meter which saw protests from the people.

Sources told Herald that the villagers showed them the papers that the land rate in the area was around Rs 60.
The meeting of the steering committee was chaired by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat.
Members of parliament Shantaram Naik, Francisco Sardinha, Shripad Naik, Public Works DepartmentMinister Churchill Alemao, Sports Minister Babu Azgaonkar, North Goa Collector  Mihir Wardhan and Airports Authority of India representatives are the other members of the committee.
Briefing newsman after the meeting Kamat said the meeting was called to discuss various aspects of the project.
“We discussed on the land outlay, approach road to the airport etc,” Kamat told reporters.
When asked about the rate fixed for land acquisition, he said, “It’s decided taking into consideration the present market rate.”
Kamat further said that the members of the committee have decided that the approach road should also be of 60 meters width and land for this has already been acquired by the PWD.
“The PWD will just have to transfer land for the airport,” he said adding “…soon we will be calling bids for appointing consultants for the project”.
