PERNEM: Mopa Vimantal Panchcroshi Pidit Jan sanghatana have raised objection to the proposed Sunburn festival proposed at Manohar International Airport, Mopa. In this regard, the forum will be writing a letter to heads of five panchayats requesting them to oppose the same. Forum said that they don’t want sunburn to come into villages and disturb the peace of the villages.
“Sunburn is given the name of a festival but it’s not a festival, but a party. We have heard about the incidents that take place at these parties which have been organized in the state for the past several years and their impact in terms of illegal activities including drugs, alcohol and others. We don’t want it to reach our villages. We strongly oppose Sunburn and appeal to people to unitedly fight this. We also appeal to the government not to encourage such parties in villages and cause harm to the peace of the villages,” Bhaskar Narulkar, member of the forum said.
“We have written letters to the five panchayats that are surrounding Mopa airport and will be submitting letters to the Deputy Collector Pernem and Police station. A special letter will also be written to the chief secretary,” Narulkar informed.
The forum in the letter stated, “The proposed Sunburn festival which is likely to be hosted at Mopa should not be given permission as we are aware that the festival organized in the past in other part of Goa was a nuisance to the local public in all respects and there were number of complaints from public with regards to involvement of drugs, alcohol and other illegal activities. Our area being a peaceful area and as our local youth are away from such illegal activities it is our request to please oppose such a move to bring a Sunburn festival in our area. If the government moves such a proposal in favor of the event, then we will come on the roads in protest”, the letter said.
Meanwhile, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said having Sunburn festival at Mopa would be a bad idea and would not benefit locals in any way. He told media at Calangute, that “Events such as Sunburn should be held close to a beach. If they don’t want to have it at Anjuna-Vagator, they can have it in south Goa.”
