MARGAO: The aftermath of the rise in water level due to the Okchi cyclone has continued on the second consecutive day. Nearly seven to eight shacks in Benaulim got washed away on Monday afternoon, as high waves lashed the shore.
Five shacks in Mobor have been forced to close down as they were washed off on Sunday.
It was yet another unpleasant surprise for the tourists and the shack owners at Benaulim. The naval helicopter was seen hovering over the coastal area on Monday afternoon.
Shack owners say nearly five shacks have been damaged to such an extent that they will be forced to close down for at least next 5 to 10 days. Since this has happened in the middle of the tourist season the shack owners say they have made huge losses.
Benaulim shack owners witnessed the surging waves which removed all their goods from the shacks, including beach beds and wooden structure of the shacks.
One of the shack owner said till evening no government authority had visited Benaulim beach to ascertain the loss.
The District Collector Anjali Sehrawat said their initial report has pegged the loss of all the South Goa shacks to nearly Rs 30 to 40 lakh, where nearly 40 shacks faced the brunt of cyclone Okchi.
