PANJIM: More than 160 houses were partially damaged in different areas of the Tiswadi Taluka causing an estimated loss of Rs 7.50 crore due to gusty winds and rainfall triggered by Cyclone Tauktae on Sunday.
The houses were mostly damaged due to falling trees like mango, coconut, jackfruit, banyan, tamarind and jungle trees. However, no casualties were reported in the Tiswadi Taluka.
Also a portion of a slab of St Ann Church, situated at Santana, Telaulim was damaged causing a loss of Rs one lakh while, glass facade of Dr Shayamprasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium at Taleigao Plateau was damaged due to gusty winds. Drifting of barges were also reported at Siridao Beach.
At Batim, a fair price shop and a wine shop were damage due to falling of trees while, three cars were also damaged due to falling of trees at Santana-Telaulim, Goa Velha and Corlim.
In one incident, a driver escaped with minor injuries when a huge banyan tree fell on his vehicle at Goa Velha market.
Maximum houses have been damaged in the villages of Bambolim-Curca-Telalim, Merces, Goltim-Navelim, Chorao, Corlim, Carambolim, Goa Velha, Santa Cruz and Taleigao.
At Goltim-Navelim, a house belonging to Nutan Gaunekar was badly damaged due to falling of a mango tree. The total loss is estimated at Rs 1.17 lakh.
At many places, the uprooted trees have been cut and cleared by fire personnel while a few places the clearing of trail of destruction is still on.
