PANJIM: Expressing his concern over women falling prey to cyber frauds in the State, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has advocated the need for financial literacy.
Addressing the State-level “Swaympurna Utssav” atat Panjim on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Sawant pointed out that of over Rs 100 crore fraud, almost 99 per cent monies were invested by women depositors. He said that women have been saving money but they often don’t know where and how to invest. They make wrong investments and then land in trouble, he cautioned.
The Chief Minister said that before investing, the depositor should find out the credibility of the financial institutions. He said that some individuals are collecting deposits with the intention to siphon off people’s money and therefore financial literacy was utmost essential.
The Chief Minister further disclosed that of the three persons arrested for cheating people on the pretext of providing government jobs, two accused were women.
Stressing on empowering women, he said that today women are par on men and made a mention of gender parity. He appealed to women and self-help groups (SHGs) to make optimum use of the government schemes and to become self-reliant. He stated that the Union government had taken remarkable steps to empower women, including the passing of the Women’s Reservation Bill, which seeks to provide 33 per cent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, the cancellation of the a triple Talaq bill, and the provision of free LPG gas connections
Union Minister of State for Tourism Shripad Naik said that the Union government had implemented many initiatives to empower women, as the four powerful pillars of Viksit Bharat 2047.
