TIVIM: Stepping up their protest against noise pollution along the Pernem coast, residents of Morjim have decided to oppose all parties that play loud music beyond the permissible time.
A large number of residents from various villages of Pernem coastal belt attended the meeting on Wednesday evening, which was called to oppose loud music being played in the last few days.
Addressing the villagers, Parsem Sarpanch Devendra Prabhudesai said they are not against parties, but are against noise pollution. “The noise pollution should stop completely. We are not against parties, but will not tolerate noise pollution in the areas,” stated Prabhudesai.
“SSC exams are just round the corner; starting on March 3 and students need to prepare for their exams. If the law agencies do not act, then we will come on the roads with a large number of residents and will be forced to do the job of the law agencies,” he warned.
A restaurant owner, Daniel Moses, demanded a solution instead of pointing fingers at each other. “I request all to find a solution rather than point fingers at each one. Rather than discussing and arguing on noise pollution ban, there is a need to find a solution to the issue so that everybody is happy. Banning sound is not the way out, but finding solution to it is the alternative,” added Moses.
Another restaurant owner pointed that “music of all types is respected all over the world and it’s the individual’s choice of music that we must respect.”
“It is because of music that restaurants are earning and the government also earns revenue. If loud music is hindrance to certain section of people, then provide the music lovers with a special music zone. Music should be allowed, as tourists flock to Goa because of it,” said the restaurant owner.
Adv Prasad Sahapurkar said loud music will not be tolerated beyond specified hours and appealed to the villagers to come out in large numbers and drive out the noise pollution from the area.
It may be recalled that on Wednesday a joint meeting was convened by residents along with Pernem Taluka Noise Pollution Monitoring Committee and different panchayat members of Morjim, Arambol, Mandrem and Parcem.
