Morjim shack owners dare the law

Many structures yet to be dismantled; hawkers, ice-cream vendors, deck becks, unauthorised vehicles create a nuisance along coast

PERNEM: Although most of the shacks have been dismantled by owners on 31 May, one could still see few structures being operational in June at Morjim brazenly defying the rules of the Tourism Department.

With beach beds encroaching close to the shoreline, the ice-cream vendors and hawkers too freely roaming and selling their wares in the restricted area causing inconvenience to visitors.

This is happening at the backdrop of Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte’s remarks regarding directing police and tourism police forces to take action against violators. The restaurants run in private areas at Vitthaldas wada are also running in full swing.

Locals have accused these restaurants of illegally running their business without the NOC from the State Pollution Control Board.

“The beach beds are a headache to visitors. The panchayat and the Tourism Department must take the action against the violators,” said a local Raya Shetye.

“We saw two vehicles irresponsibly being driven right on the beach. The beach beds are too close to the shoreline. There are no neither changing rooms nor washrooms at the beach,” said Pune based visitor Nitin Gadkar.
