PANJIM: Mormugao town is among several Indian cities that will submerged by up to 2.7 feet of water by 2100, predicted the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States in its recent report on climate change.
Mormugao, Mumbai, Kandla, Okha, Bhavnagar, Mangalore, Cochin, Paradip, Khidirpur , Visakhapatnam, Chennai and Tuticorin are among the cities and towns across Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala – all along south-west coast- that will submerged by the end of the century
Data from satellite and ground equipment, as well as analysis and computer simulation, were used to make the sea level forecasts, in a study released by NASA as part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report.
In its study, NASA said under global warming conditions that the Earth is reeling under; sea levels around the world have been rising and are projected to continue rising in the future.
NASA’s Sea Level Change Team has created a sea level projection tool that makes extensive data on future sea-level rise from the IPCC easily accessible to the public.
The sea-level rise projection is relative to baseline of 1995-2014. The sea level which is below 0.5 metres will rise above 1.0 metres by 2175.
The most recent iteration of the IPCC’s work, the sixth Assessment Report from Working Group I, was released on Monday. The report was utilised by the scientists to analyse the alarming changes in the temperature and ice cover, greenhouse gas emissions and sea level throughout the world.
As per the report, the average global surface temperature has risen by about 1.1 degree Celsius between 1850-1900, a level not seen since 1,25,000 years ago, before the most recent ice age.
The report further states that society’s continued reliance on fossil fuels is warming the planet at a rate that is unprecedented in the past 2000 years.
