VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council is in a fix as the contractor appointed by Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) has refused to treat the fresh waste dumped at the plant at Headland Sada.
Managing solid waste has become a major problem for the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) due to dumping of mixed waste at plant at Headland Sada.
“Our company is specialised in bio-mining and bioremediation, which is treatment of old garbage heaps, which are almost four-five years old. However, with fresh garbage, the company would not be in position to treat the same presently,” informed Vatsal Dubey, Project manager Eco Pro Environment Services
He said that till last year before suspending the work during monsoon they had cleared Blocks A and C and were planning to start with Block D. However, after monsoon, when they returned to the site, they noticed that Block A was totally filled with garbage and MMC had started dumping mixed garbage in Block C, which was actually their working area. Therefore, to restart the work, they shifted machineries from Block C towards Block D side and started treating garbage dumped in Block D.
“We are doing our work at a very good pace and have almost finished around 80 percent by clearing huge amount of old trash dumped at the plant. However, it’s a very challenging situation for us here, as it is very difficult to find people, who can actually stand here and work amongst foul smell. In fact, many of our workers as well as managers and site supervisors have left the job because of the current situation. Still, we take the situation very positively as it was our commitment and we are working towards our goal,” Dubey said.
Dubey said segregation at source plays very vital role in any town. “We have worked in Indore and other cities where segregation at source is compulsory and this helps in handling garbage efficiently. This system should be also included in MMC,” he said.
Meanwhile, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said though MMC has been putting lot of efforts to strictly implement the collection of segregated garbage through its door-to-door collection scheme, however due to non-cooperation from the public mixed garbage lands up at the plant, which hampers the smooth operations.
