VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) will soon adopt a resolution to revise the rent for its residential and commercial properties to Rs 5 and Rs 12 per sq mts respectively. The decision was taken at a meeting of tenants called by Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida on Wednesday to amicably settle the long-pending issue of outstanding rent arrears from municipal properties.
A healthy interaction with the original as well as sub-lessees of MMC properties was held on various subjects, including the confusion created by few orders of the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA).
Vasco-based industrialist Paresh Joshi, who is also a lessee, asked the MMC to act as per Section 88 (3) of the Goa Municipalities Act, under which municipal bodies cannot hike the rent unless approved by the DMA.
He also suggested that as many lessees intended to settle the issue, the MMC should recalculate the arrears as per the old rates and waive the interest on the arrears as it was high. He also accused the MMC of not taking up repairs of its premises.
