Mormugao councillors move no-trust motion against chief

Accuse MMC Chairperson of not taking them into confidence while taking decisions

VASCO: In a sudden development 13 councillors of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday moved a no-confidence motion against the Chairperson Bhavana Nanoskar.
The Councillors demanded the removal of Nanoskar over the allegations of increasing illegalities in the MMC jurisdiction and accused the Chairperson of not taking them into confidence while taking decisions.
Replying to demand for her resignation, the Chairperson claimed that the issues are legal ones and will be resolved after consultation and action will be initiated.
Uproar at the meeting started over the issuance of licence to a chicken shop in the market deemed as illegal. The Councillors alleged that the administration and the chairperson have issued a licence to a chicken shop despite a court order stopping the same.
Councillor Kritesh Gaonkar alleged that gambling den operators have been meeting the chairperson and have been seeking pardon. The issue caused uproar at the meeting. The councillors also alleged that gambling dens in Vasco are operated under gadda licences.
They questioned the chair as to why the administration and police are not taking action against this illegal trade.
The Chairperson assured to take action in this regard.
“We will take actions against all the illegalities not just one or two cases. As far as allegations of me supporting illegalities, I would say that I wouldn’t have taken up this matter for discussion if I was supporting them,” said Bhavana Nanoskar.
The Chairperson said that she will check on the matters of trade licences raised by the Councillors.
Councillor Reema Sonurlekar warned Councillor Krishna Daji Salkar not to interfere in her ward.
Reema alleged that the men sent by Salkar have undertaken fogging in her ward without giving any notice to the local councillor.
Reema has further threatened to chase the men away using force if such exercise continues.
The Council has been informed on the land for a cattle pound offered by the Chairman of the Mormugao Hindu Samaj Association Narayan Bandekar.
“The land has been offered to us for cattle pound. However, there is a proposed pump office of sewage plant here and hence we have to inspect and make sure both the proposals get approved,” former chairperson Deepak Naik said.
