Mormugao Municipality clamps down on sale of fish at unauthorised locations

Following complaints from local fish vendors, the civic body closed stalls selling fish to customers at the wholesale market and evicted roadside seafood vendors

VASCO: In response to demands from fish vendors in Vasco market, the Mormugao Municipal Council has cracked down on the sale of fish in wholesale markets and on the roadsides.

The action was taken after fish vendors marched into the office of Mormugao’s chairperson, urging immediate measures against the illegal sale of fish.

The affected fish vendors had even threatened to sell fish in front of the municipal building if the issue was not addressed.

Chairperson Leo Rodrigues emphasized the municipality’s zero-tolerance policy towards illegal activities within its jurisdiction. Following a complaint from Vasco market fish vendors, who have been reporting significant losses affecting their livelihoods, the action was taken against wholesale fish vendors at Khareawado.

Rodrigues also highlighted the municipality’s previous efforts in tackling encroachments and roadside vendors, driven by citizen complaints.

Additionally, he denied the ‘baseless allegations’ made by Custodio D’Souza, a fishermen leader, who claimed that municipal staff received monetary benefits from the wholesale fish vendors, and were protecting them in return.
