VASCO: The Mormugao municipality staff seized items from two shops at Baina under police protection.
The shop owners claimed that they are being targeted whereas the MMC staff maintained that the shop owners which had a licence to function as handcart have converted them into shops which forced the municipality to initiate action.
Sources said, MMC along with his demolition squad visited the site with an order, however, on account of the massive support from the locals to the shop owners, the squad had to return.
Later in the evening, MMC officials rushed to the site along with the police force and seized articles and goods from two shops at Baina.
The shop owners claimed that MMC action is politically motivated and they are being targeted selectively as there are several controversial structures in the area.
MMC staff Sadashiv Harmalkar said, “The shop owners had licenses to operate as carts but have converted the same into shops, which compelled the civic body to initiate action against them. These shops have not been demolished nor sealed.”
