Mormugao Port taxi operators annoyed over coaches presence

MPTTU says coaches are transporting almost 85 per cent of tourists arriving from cruise ships directly thereby affecting their business

VASCO: The tourist taxi operators from harbour cruise terminal were annoyed on Wednesday as majority of the cruise ship tourists boarded the coach buses directly, thereby hampering their business.

Speaking to the reporters, Mormugao Port Tourist Taxi Union (MPTTU) leader Sanjay Kanoji informed that the coaches are transporting almost 85 per cent of the tourists arriving from cruise ships directly. The coaches’ presence at the terminal is affecting our business.

“We have spoken to the police inspector in presence of one MPT officer and have decided to have a joint meeting wherein a mutual solution is expected. If not then we will have to take further step, which we will reveal at the right time,” Kanoji said.

He said that the foreign cruise has arrived with 2,000 guests but 1,500 have already booked. The local taxi operators who are dependent on this business for their daily bread and butter are in loss. Around, 58 coaches have been brought by the agent and have captured all the business.

Another member of the MPTTU said that a few days back a meeting was held with the collector and was agreed upon to divide half of the business but now we are being sidelined. If such things continue then we won’t remain quite.
