Mormugao to get its new Chairperson today

VASCO: Elections for the post of the Chairperson (CP) and vice- chairperson (VCP) of the Mormugao Municipal Council will be held on Wednesday, June 26. Each position has four contenders vying for the same.
Sources revealed that four councillors namely Yatin Kamurlekar, Nandadeep Raut, Rochana Borkar and Saifullah Khan have filed their nomination for the CP post.
Similarly, for the VCP post, Reema Sonurlekar, Shridhar Mardolkar, Leo Rodrigues and Murari Bandekar filed their nominations.
All the aspirants submitted their nomination to Chief Officer (CO) of MMC Gaurish Sankhwalkar.
When it comes to the race for the next CP, Nandadeep Raut and Yatin Kamurlekar have been backed by Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida. The other two councilors Saifullah Khan and Rochana Borkar, are from the previous ruling panel, which is backed by Urban Development Minister Mormugao MLA, Milind Naik. When it comes to the race for the next VCP, Reema Sonurlekar and Shridhar Mardolkar are from Almeida’s panel whereas Leo Rodrigues and Murari Bandekar are from the previous ruling panel backed by Naik.
Margao Municipal Council CO, Siddhivinayak Naik, will be presiding officer for this meeting, which will be held at 11 am on Wednesday. It may be recalled Mormugao Municipality has been besieged with the bitter dispute between the two panels. The saga which began on May 3, when the first no confidence motion that was moved against the former CP Kritesh Gaunkar and VCP Shashikant Parab, finally came to an end on June 13, when the duo backed by Naik were toppled by the councilors backed by Almeida. Incidentally, both the MLAs belong to BJP.
