VASCO: Polling to Ward 5 of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) was by and large peaceful, with no untoward incident reported from any part on Sunday.
A turnout of around 72.36% was recorded. The ward has 2,409 voters, out of which 1,748 voted in favour of the three candidates in the fray. The voting which started at 8 am concluded at 5 pm and no untoward incidents were reported though there complaints and cross-complaints, which were withdrawn by the candidates in the evening.
Counting of votes will take place at the office of the Deputy Collector Mormugao Vasco on Monday at 8 am.
The bye-election was initially scheduled for April 6, but it was postponed to April 27 due to the Lok Sabha elections in the State.
It may be recalled that soon after the MMC election in 2010, Sanjay Manjrekar had filed a case against the winning candidate, Tukaram (Rajesh) Redkar, a teacher by profession, for holding an office of profit at the time of election.
The District Court at Margao had pronounced its verdict in favour of Manjrekar and Redkar later challenged the verdict before the High Court.
The High Court upheld the verdict in favour of Manjrekar and disqualified Redkar as councillor.
