VASCO: The water crisis in Mormugao will continue for another two weeks since the Public Works Department, Vasco, has been receiving 10 MLD less water than the actual requirement. The deficit in water supply to Mormugao started last week due to the high level of manganese in the raw water at the Selaulim Dam, and this has affected the filtration process of the water treatment plant at Xelpem, Sanguem.
According to the Technical Assistant of PWD, Vasco, Mohan Naik, an average of 10 MLD less water is received by them, while the actual requirement is 65 to 68 MLD every day to cater to the needs of domestic and commercial units in Mormugao. Out of this 68 MLD, the PWD has been supplying around 15 MLD of treated water to bulk consumers, including Zuari Industries, Navy and other industrial units in Mormugao. Besides that, about 5 MLD is supplied to Agassaim and Loutolim.
To control the present situation, the PWD has pushed the burden on bulk consumers by reducing their supply more than the supply to the domestic consumers.
“Mormugao being at the tail end of the water supply chain from Selaulim, the supply of treated water to Mormugao gets reduced whenever such issues of manganese content in raw water arise. We are trying our best to ensure that there is equitable distribution of water to all. We are also trying to supply water through tankers to the areas where the supply is more affected,” Naik said.
Although the water shortage has affected all the consumers in Mormugao taluka, the residents of certain areas, including MES College Zuarinagar, Birla-Zuarinagar, Cansaulim, Chicalim, New Vaddem, Vaddem, Shantinagar and Mangor have been severely affected, and if the normal water supply does not resume, the situation will become worse in the days to come.
