In the history of the State, it is for the first time that the arrival of the monsoon has been delayed by over a fortnight. The season has taken even academia and scientists by surprise as pre-monsoon showers too disappeared from the scene.
IMD Goa Director Dr Krishnamurthy Padgalwar pointed at Cyclone Vayu which disturbed the advancement of the Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall (ISMR). He said, “The delay can be attributed to cyclone Vayu which passed off the coast of Goa in the Arabian Sea, taking away all the moisture from the surface.”
Responding to a question on when was the last such delay, he said, “As per the currently available records at IMD Goa Centre, such a situation has never occurred during the last two decades. This is for the first time the arrival of monsoon has been delayed to such a date.”
He further said that there is no denial that this could be the most-delayed monsoon over a much longer period but the data will have to be fetched from IMD Regional Centre at Pune.
