Mother, one-year-old son killed in accident at Torxem

Police have taken the driver of the lorry into custody and are further investigating the case. The Gundecha family hailed from Pune and were on their way to South Goa.

PERNEM: A mother and her one-year-old son were killed in a tragic road accident at Torxem after the car in which they were travelling had a head-on collision with a lorry. 

The accident occurred at around 12 pm when the car with five occupants including husband and wife and their one-year-old son, four-year-old daughter and domestic help was proceeding towards Pernem while a Kerala registered lorry was moving towards Patradevi. 

Both the vehicles collided head-on near the government primary school and Apurva Gundecha, 32 and her one-year-old son Avyan died on the spot, Piyush Gundecha, 33 and their four-year-old daughter sustained minor injuries and are undergoing treatment at North Goa District Hospital, Mapusa while the domestic help Nikita is undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.

The impact of the accident was so severe that the car was completely damaged and the occupants were trapped inside the vehicle. When villagers heard the loud noise, they rushed to the spot and managed to rescue Nikita and shift her to the hospital while others were removed by the Pernem Fire Station team, who used hydraulic equipment to cut the front doors and remove the injured and the dead.

The front part of the lorry has also been badly damaged. Mopa Police conducted the panchanama and shifted the bodies to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim for post-mortem.

Police have taken the driver of the lorry into custody and are further investigating the case. The Gundecha family hailed from Pune and were on their way to South Goa.
