MARGAO: The Sessions Court, Margao on Tuesday sentenced mother and son duo to undergo 10 years rigorous imprisonment each for culpable homicide not amounting to murder of their relative Suryakant Dessai at Xelvona-Curchorem.
The Court also ordered them to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh each or in the default to undergo six months simple imprisonment.
Both have been convicted under Section 304 of IPC. They were charged under Section 302 of IPC by the Curchorem police for committing murder of deceased Suryakant Dessai (44). The court however held them guilty under Section 304 of IPC.
Police had arrested a mother and son for murdering their nephew/cousin Dessai at Xelvona-Curchorem.
The accused woman Shevanti (55) and her son Hemant Dessai (28) hit the deceased with a pickaxe behind the head after a quarrel over a property dispute.
The accused Hemant had fled from the scene after the incident. The mother, who was at home, was arrested after the wife of the deceased complained to the police that her husband was assaulted by the duo. Earlier, police registered a complaint under Section 307 for attempt to murder.
Soon after the fight, seeing the condition of the deceased, neighbours shifted grievously injured Dessai to Curchorem Primary Health Centre, Cacora, Curchorem from where he was taken to then Hospicio Hospital, Margao, now South Goa District Hospital. Since his condition was very serious, he was taken to Goa Medical College (GMC) Bambolim but he died on the way.
