CANACONA: There are at least 10 designated bus stops between Gulem and Balli on National Highway (NH66) in Canacona which pose danger to the other motorists as buses halt for passengers to alight and get in at these bus stops which are on blind curves.
“Demand from motorists to either shift the bus stops or to construct a bus bay has till now fallen on deaf ears,” complains regular commuters.
Inspite of Indian Motor vehicles act clearly specifying that no vehicle should be stopped in such a way that it obstructs or endangers the protection of, or cause inconvenience to other road users these stops are causing great difficulty to other road users.
All these bus stops were designated by authorities decades ago when rarely vehicles used to ply on this road.
And with multi-fold increase in vehicular traffic, the Traffic Police should have requested the highway authorities to convey these bus stops a little ahead or behind, but for reasons best known to them they have not taken any action till now blame regular travellers from Canacona to Margao.
“The NH66 road designed during Portuguese rule of Goa has not seen any drastic changes except some cosmetic make up at a few places, the authorities have to widen this road on priority” said Pradeep Mokhardakar, a social activist from Canacona.
“All over the world the highways have bus bays and it’s high time the PWD officials make the bus bays a reality on NH66 to put an end to the accidents happening due to stoppage of buses on the roads,” expressed Mokhardakar.
