MARGAO, JUNE 12
The monsoons have almost set in the State, but mound of waste is awaiting clearance from Goa’s lone wholesale fish market in the city here.
A visit to the market owned by the South Goa Planning and Development Authority revealed that tones of waste lay accumulated in the market premises for want of clearance.
SGPDA officials had no answer when asked over the delay in disposing off the waste. Incidentally, miscreants had disposed off the waste by burning last year, causing an environmental hazard.
Local residents feared that the waste might find its way into the adjoining paddy fields during the monsoon as was the case in the past and demanded that the PDA step in and clear the waste from the market area. “In the past, all the thermocol waste found its way in the fields, causing nuisance to the farming community. The PDA should act fast and clear the waste immediately”, remarked a local resident.
