PANJIM: The controversial move of Goa government to renew an offshore casino licence to former Haryana minister Gopal Kanda has been challenged in the High Court at Goa.
Activist advocate Aires Rodrigues has moved the High Court of Bombay at Goa objecting to grant of licence to the offshore casino belonging to Golden Globe Hotels Private Limited in River Mandovi. The High Court will hear the petition on Thursday morning.
Rodrigues has in his petition sought the recall of the order passed by the High Court on August 1, 2016 which was passed after a statement by additional Advocate General Dattaprasad Lawande to the court which was contrary to official records.
In his petition, Rodrigues pointed out that the court was wrongly informed that the government had favourably considered the representation made by Golden Globe Hotels Private Limited to renew their licence from the year 2011 to 2016.
Rodrigues has submitted that an affidavit was filed by the Under Secretary Home on December 7, 2015 that the expired casino licence could not be renewed. It was also brought to the notice of the court that with the cabinet decision the Goa government had decided in the year 2014 not to renew expired casino licences.
