PANJIM: Centre for Responsible Tourism has welcomed the decision of the Police Department to verify antecedents of taxi drivers as it would curtail not only ‘illegal’ drivers from operating but also prevent legal operators from using private vehicles as taxis.
“The Police Department ought to strengthen the system to check operators using private vehicles for taxi service, illegally,” CRT In-charge Fr Freddy Braganza said.
Alleging that large-sized taxi operators often compete with local interests, such as tourist taxi owners and drivers, due to corporate greed, CRT has also raised serious concern over the Government attempts to facilitate web-based taxi services through operators in the State.
“There is a great amount of disappointment that the government which should engage the common people in securing their livelihood, is enabling the introduction of taxi services by the big business,” a CRT press release says.
CRT urged the government to enhance the necessary infrastructure to curtail the illegalities prevailing in the State which prevents the small enterprises from growing.
Meanwhile, Congress office bearer Durgadas Kamat has demanded immediate action by the police against Ola Cabs for operating without a license and without even an office in Goa.
