MARGAO: Political instability has come back to haunt the Margao Municipal Council with the opposition bracing up to table a no-confidence motion against Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello.
The move to dislodge Rebello is believed to have received the blessing of the two MLAs – Digambar Kamat and Vijai Sardesai – as the nine-member opposition is reported to have mustered the magic figure of 11 city fathers to sign on the motion.
Sources in the know said the opposition finalised plans to move the no-trust motion against the Chairperson at a meeting held at the residence of Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai when they had met to discuss the cleanliness program under the PM’s Swach Bharat campaign.
It is learnt that the Fatorda MLA gave his go-ahead signal to the opposition group after a municipal worker, who hails from Fatorda area of the city, was transferred and posted at the Sonsodo waste dumping site by the municipal administration.
Vijai and the opposition, sources said, were agitated when Chief Officer, Narayan Sawant, expressed his helplessness in transferring back the handicapped employee, attributing the transfer to the council decision.
When contacted, Gonzaco said he has decided to wait for the opposition to table the no-confidence motion before disclosing his course of action. “I have heard that the opposition is trying to move a no-confidence motion against me. They have been trying to dislodge me from office for quite some time. Let them first give the notice and then I will chalk out my course of action”, he said.
The Chairperson denied that the transfer of the employee has anything to do with the moves to dislodge him from office, saying
the employee was transferred as per the decision of
the council.
