PANJIM: Heavy rains accompanied by thunder that lashed the state on Friday evening continued on Saturday as a result of low pressure area in the Arabian Sea. Four inches rainfall was recorded in the last 24-hours by Indian Meteorological Department.
Predicting heavy rains for the next two days, IMD Goa observatory has issued a warning to fishermen not to venture into the sea for next 24-hours as conditions will be rough.
A well-marked low pressure area over the west, central, adjoining east Central Arabian Sea and south Arabian Sea at mean sea level brought heavy showers into the State, brining in much needed respite from the soaring mercury, bringing down day temperature to 32 degree Celsius and night temperature to 23 degree Celsius.
IMD Goa director V K Mini said that there is also upper air circulation extending to mid troposphere level of 7.6 km above the mean sea level. “The low pressure area is likely to develop into a depression and rains accompanied by thunder will continue till Monday,” she said.
The three-month monsoon season that started in Goa in the second week of June, ended with the state receiving total 106 inches of rainfall (2604.7mm), which is considered normal, since it was just two inches less than the normal average.
South mamlatdars told to remain on alert
MARGAO: With the 2009 Canacona tragedy still fresh in the minds of the district administration, South Goa district Collector Venancio Furtado on Saturday alerted the taluka Mamlatdars as well as the fire services and health officials in the wake of the heavy showers that lashed the district in the last 24 hours.
Furtado had an emergency meeting with the taluka mamlatdars and other officials in the district collectorate on Saturday evening and has issued directions to operate the control room from October 25-31. He has further directed the mamlatdar to inform their staff and the talathis to be more alert.
The Collector inquired with the Mamlatdar of Mormugao whether the taluka was hit by any calamity during the last 24 hours. Strict instructions were issued to the mamlatdars in South district to make themselves available in their jurisdiction and submit report to the collectorate control room after every eight hours.
