PONDA: North Goa MP Shripad Naik may be considered a political heavyweight, but his personal weight was equivalent to coins worth about Rs 42,000.
To mark Naik’s 60th birthday on Friday, the Marcaim BJP Block conducted an unusual ritual ‘tulabhar’ and Naik was weighed against thousands of coins.
According to information, BJP workers from Marcaim constituency contributed coins in different denominations. The total coins weighed amounted to about Rs 42,000 and party workers informed that the sum will be donated towards Uttarakhand Relief Fund as per wishes of the North Goa MP.
BJP national Vice President and MP Smriti Irani along with BJP Goa State President Vinay Tendulkar, Law Commission Chairman Adv Narendra Savoikar and several other BJP functionaries attended the ‘Tulabhar’ programme at the ancestral house of Naik at Adpoi-Durbhat, Ponda.
“While congratulating Naik on his birthday, I pray to God to give him good health so that he can continue to guide us,” said Irani.
Pradip Shet, a BJP member from Marcaim, added, “We need politicians like Shripad Naik. Politicians normally carry a bad image, but our ‘Bhau’ is different from the rest of the politicians. He is clean and politicians should follow in his footsteps.”
