vasco: The Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) hospital from Headland Sada has been taken over under the Disaster Management Act for COVID asymptomatic patient management.

However, some people have raised concerns about the general medical assistance and OPD facilities there.

“As per the Disaster Management Act, the government has taken this hospital with its working staff for the management of COVID asymptomatic patients,” said MPT Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer Nimish Pillai to Herald.

“We are trying to shift the general OPD to another building belonging to MPT and we will be starting some OPDs there,” said Pillai while responding to a query whether they have any substitute plan for starting a general OPD.

Leonardo Rodrigues, president of Mormugao Port Railway Workers Union and Ex-Trustee of MPT said that his demand with the MPT Chairman was that they should get the facilities which they were getting earlier at the hospital.

He said there are 1,500 workers and 4,000 pensioners and their families, which adds up to 15,000 people. “15,000 people cannot be deprived of other treatment to accommodate COVID patients there,” he said.

Speaking about the proposal to shift the OPD near Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hall, Rodrigues said the space there is insufficient. “Earlier there was a Primary Health Centre (PHC) there, which may not be equipped to perform major or minor operations. There are only two beds for examining the patients in the PHC. I will also seek the help of the South Goa Collector and see whether he can help us” he added.
