VASCO, JUNE 14
Some 400 workers of Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) who were on a strike for the last four days resumed work on Sunday evening much to the relief of five stranded vessels.
It may be recalled that some 400 workers from marine department and cargo handling labour department had stopped working since the last four days to protest against the imposition of new manning scale as per the National Industrial Tribunal Award.
The three rounds of talks between Unions and port administration failed to resolve the dispute.
After the arrival of MPT Chairman Pravin Agarwal in the State on Sunday, an immediate meeting was convened with the Unions and after rounds of discussion and negotiations, the Marine Department agreed to end the protest and resumed work on Sunday evening.
Sources informed that after the imposition of new manning scale, the Marine Department was asked to reduce its manpower from 12 workers each to 6 workers on a single tug boat. But after negotiation with port administration, the Union agreed on 11 workers in each group.
Sources further said that five vessels, which suffered heavy losses, got a respite and two of them had already departed on Sunday evening, while three vessels will depart late Sunday.
