PANJIM: Marathi Rajbhasha Andolan, which is demanding official language status to Marathi, has jumped into the parliamentary election fray and declared Ranjit Singh Rane as their candidate for North Goa seat.
Rane, hailing from Sattari is son of former Pernem and Tivim MLA Jaisinghrao Rane. He is a school teacher and co-founder of Sattari Yuva Jagruti Manch, a front formed to curb anti-social activities like gambling in the taluka.
Addressing media persons, MRA convenor Pradip Ghadi Amonkar said that Rane would be contesting as independent candidate under MRA banner. Candidate for South Goa would be announced in a week, he said.
MRA has appealed to people to vote against BJP in Goa to ensure that Narendra Modi-led BJP does
not come to power at
the Centre. “We would be contesting the poll with the sole aim of giving Marathi official language status in Goa,” he said.
