PANJIM: The Conservation Committee of the department of Town and Country Planning (TCP) has resolved to declare the Ruins of Church and Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Chimbel as heritage structure.
The committee that met under Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for TCP Vijai Sardesai on Friday, decided to accept the request made by Charles Correa Foundation and Ana Gracias, who had urged the committee to declare the Ruins of Church and Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Chimbel as heritage structure.
“The structure is important site in the cultural history.  It is oe of the first institutions in 1750, wherein native Goans were admitted to study the priesthood. Earlier you had to travel to other colonies or Portugal,” Minister said.
Sardesai said that Charles Correa Foundation had made the request under section 6 B II of Goa Land Development and Building Construction regulation 2010.
“We have accepted the proposal. There is a significant architectural and archaeological study already prepared in 2017 by Fundacao Oriente. Large portion of this structure has collapsed. It is the demand of the locals that this should be declared as a heritage area,” he said.
