The upcoming MTV Europe Music Awards, scheduled to take place in Paris on November 5, have been cancelled due to concerns about the global events’ volatility. The decision comes in light of the ongoing crisis in Israel and Gaza. Notable nominees for the awards included Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Bad Bunny, and the Foo Fighters.
In a statement, an MTV spokesperson explained the cancellation, emphasizing the need for caution in light of the uncertainties and potential risks associated with the current world events. The spokesperson stated that the MTV EMAs are traditionally a celebration of global music, but given the devastating events unfolding in Israel and Gaza, this is not an appropriate time for such a celebration. The ongoing loss of lives and turmoil in the region call for a moment of mourning. The awards show is now expected to return in November 2024.
The cancellation decision comes amidst Israel’s declaration to eliminate Hamas in response to one of the deadliest attacks in its history, resulting in a complete siege of the Gaza Strip and devastating strikes that have claimed thousands of lives and left more than a million people homeless.
