MARGAO: The Maritime Union of India (MUI) organised its first webinar for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam of Maritime Spectrum on the theme “Mentoring Across Maritime Sector”, which was attended by over 139 participants from the shipping fraternity.
The webinar was attended by Director General of Shipping Amitabh Kumar, MUI General Secretary Amar Singh Thakur, NUSI Secretary Abdulgani Serang, Phillip Mathews and Captain Sankalp Shukla, who were part of the panellists, shared their views on mentoring in the shipping industry and the importance of reverse mentoring and cross mentoring.
The seafarers are the most badly hit during the COVID-19 pandemic and mentoring crew on board waiting to sign off and waiting to sign on was very important and is playing a crucial role.
Discussions on as to why various States are interpreting the Central standard operating procedure (SOP) in various ways and implementing their own State SOP. It was agreed that Central SOP should be followed to ease out and streamline the procedures.
Captain Venzy Viegas, who attended the webinar being a member of MUI, expressed his satisfaction for being part of this first webinar and requested all the Goan seafarers to read the book “10 Minutes Mentoring”, which will help all in gaining positivity which is really required during this pandemic.
The take away was “Mentoring is to Bridge” the gap between knowledge and competency. Transfer of knowledge from senior ranks to the juniors is a must to have the industry prosper.
