MARGAO: Even as the proposed multi-level parking project in Margao is yet to see light of day despite receiving approval from the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA), the situation is further complicated by the use of the proposed site as an unofficial dumping ground.
Reliable sources from GSUDA, the agency tasked with the execution of the multi-level parking project, said that the project file has been sent to the government for the final nod. The proposed plan reveals 137 spaces designated for two-wheelers and 70 spaces for four-wheelers
The project was in discussion when the proposal was moved to have a restaurant on the top floor of the parking building; however, it was strongly opposed by the citizens of Margao. Even the civic body had stated that they have not given approval for a restaurant but insisted on the original plan. The project, considered crucial for Margao considering the parking problem in the commercial town of Margao, had been halted for several years owing to a lack of interest from contractors.
“We have got the approval from the SGPDA for the plans and it has been forwarded to the government. It may take another two months to complete the process before actual construction works commence at the site,” said GSUDA sources.
However, presently the site has turned up into a dumping ground, with large quantities of dry waste and debris strewn around the lot, mere metres away from the Margao Municipality building.
Sadanand Naik, a resident of Margao urged the civic body to keep the site and the surrounding market areas clean, in order to avoid a health hazard.
“Business activities are going in the vicinity of the proposed site and they are getting affected due to the garbage that is being dumped over here,” he lamented.
