Multimillion dollar drugs trade has reached villages, allege MLAs

Want government to take action on drug trade; also alleged that casinos have ruined a number of Goan families

PORVORIM: MLAs raised apprehensions over rampant drug menace in the State with some of them alleging that the illicit trade has percolated to villages.
“Drug trafficking is a multimillion dollar enterprise. It is easily available and our youth, especially in the age group of 17-30 years are getting addicted to it,” BJP’s Michael Lobo said, participating in the demands for grants on police, jail and general administration on Thursday. He also demanded that government immediately set up a rehabilitation centre as there are several drug addicts who want to quit and require help.
Congress’ Curtorim MLA. Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco said it was a social menace and that it was not restricted to the coastal belt. “Now drugs are available in villages also. It is not restricted to coastal belt only. The government should take quick action to curb the menace else Goa would be equated with Punjab where drug is a major menace,” he said.
Opposition Leader, Pratapsingh Rane, supporting the demands, alleged that narcotics are ‘killing the younger generation’.
The MLAs also discussed the ill effects of casinos alleging that a number of Goan families have been ruined. “There are families who had to sell their properties and stay in rented premises, because of gaming addiction in casinos. Government should take steps to ensure that Goans are banned from entering casinos,” Lobo said.
Similarly, human trafficking and prostitution activities were discussed on the floor of the House with MLAs apprehending that it was sending a wrong signal to tourists. “Any tourist will mistake that our Goan women are easily available. It is bringing poor name to Goa. This is not what we expect tourism and law and order to be in the State,” Rane stated, pointing at prostitution activity being carried out in certain tainted parlours.
