Mumbai in focus as Maharashtra civic polls began across 29 corporations

Voting for 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra began on Thursday morning, with Mumbai emerging as the main battleground. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance faced a stiff challenge from the reunited Thackeray cousins in the fight for control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, India’s richest civic body.

Polling for 2,869 seats across 893 wards started at 7.30 am under tight security and was scheduled to end at 5.30 pm. A total of 3.48 crore voters were eligible to choose among 15,931 candidates. Except for Mumbai, all civic bodies had multi-member wards. Counting of votes will take place on January 16.

In Mumbai, elections were held after a nine-year gap. More than 25,000 police personnel were deployed across the city.
