MAPUSA: The Health Officer of Urban Health Centre, Mapusa has directed the Mapusa Municipal Council to construct a soak pit for the municipal fish market within 30 days.

The directions are issued under Section 40 (1) of the Goa Public Health Act 1985 and Rules 1987.

The directions were issued after a joint inspection of the municipal fish market was conducted last month in the presence of municipal staff and Urban Health Centre staff based on a complaint filed by one Pravin Asolkar, a resident of Mapusa.

During the inspection, it had come to the notice that the fish market is provided with narrow drainage for letting out wastewater and all the wastewater is being let out in a gutter which is situated near the fish market.

Also, dirty water is accumulated in the drain which is blocked by mud, sand and plastic bags which is further emanating foul smell and has become a breeding place for mosquitoes and is a nuisance and impending source of health hazard to the public in general.

The Health Officer of Urban Health Centre in the notice has asked the municipal chairperson to submit a compliance report within 30 days failing which action deemed fit as per rules shall be initiated against the civic body chief.
